We dreamed of turning our backyard into a little garden oasis, and it all started with finding the right raised beds. After a lot of searching (and research), we chose Vego Garden raised beds to bring our vision to life. Today I’m sharing our honest review after planting, including the setup process, quality, materials, pros and cons, and if we’d recommend them. Vego beds promise beauty and durability, but do they deliver? Here’s everything we’ve learned along the way!

Just a little note before we get started… we bought our Vego Garden beds ourselves (no sponorships or gifts), we paid full price for them, and everything I’m sharing is 100% my own honest take.

The Start of Our Family Garden

When we moved into our home in the Texas Hill Country, one of the things I was most excited about was finally having the space to plant a real garden.

Over the years, the kids and I had planted little pots of herbs and flowers on patios and porches, and in New Jersey, we even built a small cedar raised bed for a few seasons of herbs and blooms.

But deep down, I had always dreamed of something bigger, something that could grow alongside us.

Once we got settled in, I started diving into research on the best way to start a garden here.

It didn’t take long to learn that the rocky limestone soil of the Hill Country would make digging deep beds a challenge.

Raised beds were the way to go.

Raised Garden Beds

When we started planning the garden, we knew we wanted something that would last but we quickly realized there’s a lot to think about before jumping in.

From the type of materials to how they hold up over time, choosing the right raised garden bed can feel like a big decision.

We wanted something that wasn’t just beautful when it was first built, but would last through Texas heat, heavy rains, and all the messy magic that comes with a backyard full of kids.

After a lot of research (and more than a few second-guessing moments), we found ourselves coming back to one brand again and again: Vego Garden and after planting our first season in them, I’m excited to share how they’ve held up, what we loved, and a few things we learned along the way.

Why We Chose Vego Garden Raised Beds

Vego Garden Raised Bed

After having more than one elevated raised bed fall apart on me over the years, I knew I needed to go in a different direction.

Lifespan

I first ran across Vego Garden beds through an instagram ad and absolutely loved the look of them. I began researching more and what immediately caught my attention was their promised 20+ year lifespan.

When you compare 20+ years to the two years I had my elevated beds, it sounded like a no brainer but I wanted to know more about the pain that was used on the beds since we would be eating the food we were growning.

Materials

I was happily pleased to see the beds are made from a durable steel substrate, use 100% recyclable metal, and are coated with the only USDA-approved, non-toxic paint used on garden beds.

I looked at tradional cedar beds, composite options, and even DIY kits, but nothing seemed to offer the same combination of durability, safety, and longevity as Vego.

Everything about them, down to the eco-friendly materials and third-party testing by Texas A&M, gave me a lot of peace of mind for their price.

I also loved the idea of not having to constantly worry abour repairing or replacing beds every few seasons.

I kept researching and comparing options, but no matter what else I looked at, I kept coming back to Vego Garden. It just felt like the right fit for the kind of garden we were dreaming of building.

Sizing

I also loved that Vego Garden beds offered so much flexibility. Most traditional beds I looked at were just square or rectangular with no real options to customize.

But the Vego Garden bed had a 9-in-1 design, meaning I could choose from nine different shapes to fit our space perfectly.

After all my research, it seemed like an easy choice at this point.

First Impressions: Unboxing and Setup

When I was ready to order my Vego Garden bed, I was keeping an eye on Amazon for a sale and as luck would have it, I stumbled across a lightning deal. I ordered the 17” tall, 9-in-1 metal raised planter bed in the color Olive Green.

When it arrived, I was eager to get it set up and start planning our new garden space.

I’ll be honest, the box was much smaller than I expected for something that would eventually become a full-sized garden bed. It was neatly packed, with all the panels, screws, and instructions tucked inside.

Unboxing

One of the things I love about Vego Garden beds is the flexibility they offer.

They come in a variety of heights, shapes, colors, and sizes, and the 9-in-1 design we chose meant we could build the bed into nine different layouts to best fit our backyard space.

That flexibility made it easy to plan around the size of our yard and gave us options if we ever wanted to change the layout down the road.

At first, it felt a little overwhelming to see all the pieces laid out, but once I actually got started, the setup process was surprisingly straightforward.

The instructions were easy to follow, and the modular design made it feel almost like building a giant puzzle.

It did take some time to put together (definitely a project best done with a little patience, and maybe a second set of hands if you have one), but overall, it was simple and pretty satisfying once I got into a rhythm and the kids even enjoyed helping too.

Don’t worry the nuts and bots are rounded throughout the bed and the metal top is smooth and even has a black stripping for the top. I didn’t have to worry about the bed potentially scratching the kids.

One thing I noticed right away was the quality of the materials.

The panels felt sturdy but lightweight, the paint finish was beautiful in person, and the whole design felt well thought out.

It didn’t feel flimsy or cheap like some metal garden beds I had seen before.

By the time it was fully assembled, I was even more excited to start filling it and bringing our garden dreams to life.

After seeing the quality of the Vego Garden bed, I ended up ordering two more for the space I had planned.

Filling the Garden Beds

I ordered the garden beds in September and got them set up, but I slowly worked on filling them up over time.

First, I lined each bed with cardboard to help block weeds naturally.

Then, while we kept busy clearing more bamboo, trimming cedar trees, and doing general yard cleanup, I started gathering materials.

I laid down a layer of sticks and branches on top of the cardboard, followed by a good layer of leaves.

Through the winter, I slowly built up the beds by adding compost here and there whenever I could.

By the time spring arrived, the beds were ready for the final layer: fresh soil.

These garden beds are deep, and filling them with just soil would have been incredibly expensive.

By layering branches, leaves, and compost first, I not only saved a lot of money but also set the beds up with nutrient-rich soil that will feed my plants for years to come.

After Planting: How They’re Holding Up

Now that the beds are fully planted and we’ve made it through our first planting season with them, I can honestly say I’m so glad we chose Vego Garden beds.

One thing I worried about at first was the Texas heat, I was nervous the metal would get way too hot, maybe even too hot to touch.

I’m happy to say that hasn’t been an issue at all. The beds have stayed surprisingly cool, even as the temperatures have started climbing.

Structurally, they’ve been holding up beautifully, too. Even with my kids at times climbing and pulling on the edges, there’s no bowing, shifting, rust, or damage, even after some heavy spring storms.

The deep design has given all the plants plenty of room to spread their roots, and the layering method we used (cardboard, sticks, leaves, compost, then soil) has worked like a charm.

There’s still plenty of growing ahead, but so far, these beds have been everything I hoped for sturdy, beautiful, and built to last.

What We’ve Loved + Things to Keep in Mind

What We’ve Loved

  • Super sturdy, no bowing or shifting even after heavy rains (and little kids climbing/sitting)
  • Customizable shapes to fit your space (9-in-1 design)
  • Eco-friendly, non-toxic materials (USDA-approved paint, recyclable metal)
  • Deep enough for strong root systems
  • Stayed cool even in the hot Texas heat
  • Beautiful color options (Olive Green was a favorite!)
  • Built to last, 20+ year lifespan claim

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Initial setup takes a little bit of time (lots of bolts/screws)
  • Deep beds = need a lot of fill material (but layering saved a lot of money)
  • Higher upfront cost compared to basic wood beds (but a much longer lifespan)

Final Thoughts: Would We Buy Them Again?

After using the Vego Garden beds through our spring planting season, I can confidently say, yes, I would absolutely buy them again.

I love the way they look in our backyard they add such a clean, beautiful touch to the garden but even more than that, I’m impressed by the quality. The long lifespan, the eco-friendly materials, and the sturdy design all make these beds feel like a solid investment.

While the price point is definitely higher than if I had built something myself but knowing I won’t have to deal with rotting wood, constant repairs, or replacing beds every few years makes it worth every penny in my opinion.

We’ve actually gotten so many compliments and questions about the beds from neighbors and visitors, they’re always a conversation starter!

As we continue expanding our garden over the next few years, I fully plan to purchase more.

Vego Garden also offers accessories like trellises, arches, and protective covers if you want to customize your setup even more. I haven’t personally purchased those (yet!), but it’s nice to know they offer plenty of options if we ever want to add on.

Overall, these beds have held up beautifully, made gardening more enjoyable, and I couldn’t be happier with our decision.

FAQ

What tools do you need for assembly?

All the tools you need are included with the set which makes it super easy to set up without planning ahead.

Were the instructions clear?

Yes! Once you choose which design you’d like to build the instructions are very easy to follow.

Do they rust, bend or show wear after rain/heat/etc.?

We’ve had rain and hail storms and so far they’re holding up great and not showing any signs of wear, rust, or bending.

Can you move them after they’re filled? (or are they basically permanent?)

I think the answer really depends on your personality. For me, if I wasn’t happy with the spot after the first year, I wouldn’t hesitate to move them. That said, it would definitely be a lot of work, these beds are deep (17” in my case), so relocating them would mean moving not just the beds themselves, but all the soil and layers inside too.
The good news is, the beds are bottomless, which would make the process a little easier compared to fully enclosed beds.

This is just the beginning, though.
