Simple Half Bath Decor Ideas to Refresh Your Space

Half baths, even the smallest ones (like ours), deserve attention because they’re often the only bathroom guest in your house will see. They leave a lasting impression on how welcoming and put-together your home feels.

To be honest, our half bath had been pretty depressing since we moved in. The hardware was outdated and drive me crazy with both silver and gold pieces, the space just felt very uninspired.

Every time I walked in, I knew something needed to change but a full renovation, paint, new sink, and light fixture, was not in the cards. Eventually I would love to totally make over this room but with Christmas fast approaching and family coming to visit I wanted something that would make an impact on a budget.

I wanted to creat a more cohesive and inviting look without spending a fortune or diving into a major project. With a few simple swaps, I turned our outdated half bath into a cozy space I actually enjoy, and I can’t wait to show you how!

Half Bath Decisions

When I started evaluating our half bath space and realistically planning what I could easily swap to make it feel less outdated and a little more inviting, it felt overwhelming at first. I truly wanted to pull out the outdated sink and put in something with storage but I knew it wasn’t in my budget yet.

However, I quickly realized that focusing on small, high-impact changes, like swapping out the hardware, adding a new mirror, and even incorporating decorative pieces, I could completely transform the space without a full renovation.

Picking the Perfect Updates: Before & Afters

Mirror

The first big piece I knew I could update without spending any money was the mirror. The original mirror (pictured below) was a silver mirror and although there was nothing truly wrong with it, it just wasn’t my style.

Luckily, I had a mirror in my garage already. I had used this mirror for my entryway table at our house in New Jersey but hadn’t quite found a place for it in our new Hill Country home, until now.

I bought this mirror probably 2 years ago and it’s such a beautiful piece. I didn’t want to just let it sit in the garage and I’m so thankful I’ve found it a new home! If you’re interested in this mirror, I’ve linked it here for you.

Towel Ring

For some reason, our half bath had a towel rack for full sized towels, opposite wall as the sink. I debated hanging towels there for decoration but I really didn’t like the gold and silver towel rack and it just felt out of place.

Instead of keeping it, I took this one down and much to my surprise, the old one was original to the house and I found old wall paper underneath.

I had to take out the old metal wall anchors, sand this spot down, and then use spackle on the wall to cover the holes.

I decided to add a Delta Flynn, Matte Black Single Towel Ring from Lowe’s beside the sink.

It’s a much more functional (and aesthetic) piece and now guest have a place to dry their hands.

Toilet Paper Holder

Our toilet paper holder matched the towel bar in the bathroom, but it was a bit loose, and I was ready for an update.

I bought the matching Delta Flynn, Matte Black Toilet Paper Holder for this space. I stood in the isle of Lowe’s for way too long trying to decide on a new set for this bathroom. I knew I wanted to use the matte black color for this space but there were so many choices!

Ultimately, I really appreciated the small details of this set. The single square holder with a hook was especially visually appealing.

I love how this toilet paper holder turned out.

I did run into a bit of a hiccup though. When I decided on this holder, I didn’t take into consideration that the old one had two spots which it was drilled into on our wall. Similar to the towel rack, I had to remove the drywall anchors, sand the spot, spackle, texture, and paint the wall to cover the spots.

Door Knob

If you know me I have a slight obsession with changing door knobs any chance I get to make them more charming and our half bath was no exception. The bathroom door originally had a builder grade handle on it, probably original to the house to be honest.

I checked our local home stores but none of the knobs there were really speaking to me which means I took to the internet. I ran across so many beautiful door knobs but finally settled on this beauty, an antique brass door knob.

This knob added so much character and charm to the bathroom. I’ve linked it here, along with a few of my other favorites I’ve used in our house.

Hanging Rack

Our bathroom lacked storage, and I used to keep a few toilet paper rolls on the back of the toilet. However, the kids often knocked them onto the floor. I knew I needed some shelving, but I also wanted something that could double as decor. That’s when I found this beautiful hanging wooden shelf.

I had previously ordered these little black hooks from Amazon for another project and they worked perfectly to hold this shelf. I did use wall anchors and my own larger screws to make sure the screw wouldn’t pull out of the wall with the weight. You can find the shelf and hooks linked here.

Seasonal Touches for a Cozy Half Bath

Don’t forget to add a touch of seasonal decor to your half bath! Since it’s Christmas, I included a festive hand towel, an adorable Highland Cow painting, a small rug, and a few Christmas decorative pieces to the hanging shelf.

Simple touches like these can instantly make the space feel warm, inviting, and in tune with the rest of your home’s festive decor.

I plan to update the shelf, towel, painting, and rug seasonally to keep the space feeling fresh. There are so many ways to bring charm to your half bath with simple decor.

Here are the final results of my half bath refresh. I’m so happy with how it turned out. It feels like a totally new space and even the kids walked in and said “Whoa, mommy, this looks amazing!”

One day I’d like to replace the light above the mirror but I didn’t want to do that until I replace the sink. I’m actually thinking I may end up keeping the sink, I actually don’t mind it now and I’ll just add some matte black knobs to the sink instead.

If that’s what I decide to do, I’ll replace the light fixture at that point too. I didn’t want to replace the light until I had made a decision on the sink. The light fixture isn’t exactly center to my mirror and drives me crazy but we’ll deal with that another day once I decide for sure on what to do with the sink.
