How I Made Our Family Christmas Cards + Our Cozy 2025 Reveal

I’m sharing how I put together our family Christmas cards this year, simple, cozy, and totally doable.  Perfect if you’re a busy mom trying to keep December simple. Plus our final card reveal for a little inspo!

For years I’ve dreamed about sending out a family Christmas card, but without fail, December rolls in like a blur.

In true big-family fashion, the days get full, the calendar gets chaotic, and before I know it… Christmas comes and goes and I’ve never actually made the cards.

But this year? This was the year I was determined to finally do it.

There’s just something so special, almost magical, about sending a little piece of your family to the people you love.

A moment frozen in time, wrapped up in cozy holiday warmth, arriving in someone’s mailbox. It’s always been on my heart to create that for us… and this time, I finally did.

Why I Wanted to Create Our Christmas Cards Myself This Year

I knew I wanted our Christmas cards to feel simple, sentimental, and true to the season we’re in, not overly posed or rushed.

With five kids, scheduling a studio session or dragging everyone out the door for photos feels like a whole event. And honestly, the cozy moments at home are the ones I treasure most.

So instead of planning something elaborate, I decorated our bedroom with a few Christmas touches, set my Nikon on a tripod, and let the morning unfold.

I wanted our card to feel like us, to feel like home: the Christmas pajamas, the kids climbing all over each other, the real-life joy and chaos.

Creating our own little photo moment at home felt easier, and way more meaningful.

Setting Up Our Cozy At-Home Photo Shoot

When I decided to take our Christmas cards photos at home, I wanted the whole thing to feel easy and natural.

No rushing, no fancy Christmas attire, no moments of “everyone smile!,” knowing it would be fake.

I wanted it to just be us.. in our own space.. making a little holiday magic in the middle of our day.

Decorating Our Bedroom for Christmas Photos

Our bedroom has become one of my favorite spots since we moved.

For years I’ve dreamed of decorating our bedroom for Christmas and this was the perfect excuse.

I added a few simple Christmas touches, garland over the headboard, candy cane sheets that I luckily found on sale, little trees on my night stands that I had from previous years, and the soft glow of our lamps. I also handmade a ribbon garland for an extra pop of color.

It wasn’t anything fancy or overly styled. Just cozy, and lived-in Christmas magic.

The best part? The kids were relaxed and at home.

There’s just something about being able to do photos at home, where there can flop on the bed, wiggle around, have pillow fights, and just be themselves. It really takes all the pressure off.

Using my Nikon and my IPhone (super simple!)

I used my Nikon on a tripod and connected my iPhone to the camera’s WiFi so I could snap the photos right from my phone.

It made the whole process so much easier, especially with kids. I set up the tripod, double-checked my camera settings, made sure my phone and camera were talking to each other, and even took a few test shots to get the angle just right before calling the kids in.

Because let’s be real… when you have five kids, you get a very small window where taking photos still feels fun and not chaotic. So I wanted everything ready to go the second they came into the room.

If you don’t have a DSLR, you can absolutely do this with just your iPhone. Set it on a tripod (or even stack books on a dresser) and use the timer button.

The kids won’t know the difference and you’ll still get beautiful, cozy photos for your Christmas cards.

A few mom-to-mom tips if you’re trying this at home:

• Use natural light: it’s softer and more forgiving and turn off your overhead lights.
• Keep the setup simple, the coziness shines through. You don’t need an elaborate set up.
• Take more photos than you think, someone is always blinking or looking the wrong way.
• Let the kids be themselves, the real smiles always come out this way. Honestly, some of my favorite photos are when they’re not even paying attention and having fun with each other!

And finally, expect a little chaos .. And by “a little,” I mean a lot.

I definitely went into this too optimistic, thinking, “We’ll get one smiling photo and be done!” But the second all five kids piled onto the bed, things went from calm to full-on Christmas energy in about two seconds.

There were pillow fights.

There were silly songs.

And yes… I may have bribed them with oversized candy canes.

But honestly? That’s when the real magic happened. The second I stopped trying to get the perfect posed photo and just let them be themselves, their personalities showed up and those ended up being my favorite pictures. Cozy, messy, loud, real… exactly what this season looks like in our home.

And truly? These photos are some of my favorites that I have of all the kids.

Designing Our Christmas Cards on Artifact Uprising

Once I had our photos (and a house full of candy cane–sticky children), it was finally time for the fun part…. designing the actual Christmas cards.

I uploaded my favorite image, played around with the layout for maybe two minutes, and chose a simple greeting… then I ended up leaving the inside completely blank.

I loved the idea of keeping the cards clean and photo-focused so I could write a little handwritten note on each one.

There’s something so personal and cozy about adding that small touch, especially when you’re sending them to family and friends you might not see often.

Truly, it was that fast. You know a design tool is mom-friendly when you can use it one-handed while holding a baby and still end up with something beautiful.

A few things I kept in mind while customizing:

• Photo orientation: Some designs work better with landscape photos, while others are made for portrait shots. It’s worth trying your image in a few different layouts to see what feels most balanced.
• Black & white vs. color: Cozy Christmas photos look beautiful either way, but depending on the card style, a classic black & white can make the whole design feel timeless. Color feels warm and cheerful, it just depends on your vibe.
• Caption or handwritten note: Decide if you want your card to include wording or if you’d rather leave it blank and handwrite a personalized message. I loved the idea of adding a sweet note by hand, so I left mine empty.

It all came together so easily, and when the preview popped up, it felt like… us.

And here it is… the Christmas card I’ve dreamed of making for years.

After years of saying “maybe next December,” holding these finished cards in my hands felt like such a full-circle moment.

This photo means so much to me. It’s the five kids piled on our bed in their Christmas pajamas. It’s the pillow fights and silly songs and candy cane bribery. It’s the chaos, the giggles, the tiny window of cooperation… all wrapped up into one snapshot of our life right now.

I love that this card isn’t perfect, it’s real. It feels honest and exactly like the season we’re in.
