The other night at dinner, we played a game similar to “this or that” that my kids made up. It’s been one of those completely random but surprisingly fun traditions that seem to come out of nowhere.
We take turns going around the table, usually at dinner, picking two topics. Then, we have to guess which one we think the person beside us would pick. They’ll reveal it to see if our guess was right or wrong.
It started with silly topics like “monster trucks or construction trucks,” but then one of the kids threw out “spring or fall?”
And, oh, that one got me.
I LOVE the crisp air of fall, the golden leaves, the beautiful pumpkins, the way everything feels cozy and magical. But as I sat there, thinking about it, I realized I had to choose spring.
Because as much as I adore those beautiful fall colors, spring reminds me of beauty again, of fresh starts, new beginnings, and of the world waking back up.
Now that we’re back in Texas, spring comes early, I swear in New Jersey it was like winter and the cold just hung on and it felt like spring was never going to arrive.
I can already feel spring creeping in here in Texas and it’s only February.
The air is changing, the sun stays up just a littler longer, I’m itching to get outside, and the kids are spending their evenings back outside again.
For us, spring means planting vegetable gardens, wildflowers, and whatever else little hands want to grow. It means opening the windows, letting the breeze in, and spending more time outdoors, barefoot in the grass (even though my husband tells me I need to wear shoes, haha).

And this year, with a new baby arriving soon, I find myself wanting to slow down and soak it in even more. Life is about to get busier, and I know the days will fly by. But spring feels like an invitation to pause, to notice, to celebrate the little things.
So if you’re looking for simple, sweet ways to welcome spring with your kids, here are a few ideas that don’t add more to your plate but instead help you savor the season because sometimes the best traditions are ones that remind us to just be.
Simple & Fun Ways to Welcome Spring with Kids
1. Spring-Themed Breakfast
During the school year, I have a hard time enjoying breakfast on school days, but as soon as weekends roll around, I get to enjoy baking and making breakfast with the kids on weekends. All four of my kids love coming up with breakfast ideas, slowing down, and spending quality time together in the kitchen. It’s become such a fun tradition.
I can’t think of a better way to welcome spring than including them in the kitchen with a fun spring-themed breakfast.

Spring Waffle Bar
I’m always looking for easy ways to add a little fun to our meals. I have a variety of mini waffles makers and this sunflower and bee set is perfect for spring.
A spring waffle bar is such a fun and easy way to make breakfast feel special! Along with the classic toppings like syrup and whipped cream, I love adding fresh berries, and honey to match the sunny, spring vibes.
A sprinkle of powdered sugar or edible flowers makes everything look extra cute, and for a fun touch, I set out little jars of pastel sprinkles or crushed nuts for some crunch.
Whether it’s a weekend treat or a surprise for the kids, this simple setup always makes breakfast feel a little more magical!
2. Go on a Spring Nature Walk

There’s something about spring, the air just feels fresher.
One of my favorite simple joys is taking the kids on a nature walk, no big plans, just stepping outside and letting them explore.
You don’t have to live near a nature trail to enjoy the great outdoors. In fact, when my older two were younger we would just walk our neighborhood sildewalks.
The kids noticed everything, tiny wildflowers blooming and pushing up through the craks in the sidewalk, butterflies gliding through the air, and the busy bees working.
Usually they’d collect little treasures along the way, rocks they found, fallen petals, and their favorite, feathers.
It’s one of those things that just reminds me of how simple childhood really is. They don’t need much, just fresh air, space to roam, and a mama willing to slow down and notice it all with them.
Mom Hack: Nature Walk Treasure Bracelets
Make your spring nature walk extra fun with this easy mom hack I picked up during COVID with the kids.

Wrap a piece of tape, the thicker the better (we had packing tape), sticky side out, around your child’s wrist.
As they explore on your walk they can stick tiny flowers, leaves, and even feathers onto their bracelet.
By the end of the walk, they’ve created a beautiul nature keepsake to show off and talk about.
This is such a simple way to keep their little hands busy while slowing down to enjoy spring.
3. Plant Something Together
Every spring, I make an effort to plant something with the kids.
There’s something special about digging into the dirt with the kids, planting something together, and watching it grow.
Whether we’re starting seeds in little pots on the windowsill or picking out small plants from the nursery to tuck into the garden, it always feels like the start of something magical.
The kids love choosing their own plants, usually something bright and cheerful, like marigolds or strawberries, and taking turns scooping soil, patting it down, and giving everything a good watering.
Of course, some dirt ends up on their faces, and someone inevitably overfills a pot, but that’s all part of the fun.
Gardening with kids isn’t about perfection, it’s about the excitement of seeing the first sprouts push through the soil and the joy of knowing we planted something together.

4. Read a Spring-Themed Book Together
In the mornings, while I’m sipping my coffee and not quite ready to fully wake up, or in the afternoons after naptime when everyone’s still a little groggy, I love pulling out a good spring-themed book to share with the kids.
Sometimes, they’re all in, listening intently. Other times, they’re rolling around on the couch or interrupting with a completely unrelated thought but either way, it’s a little moment of togetherness that feels just right for spring.

5. Have a Spring Picnic in the Backyard

There’s something about a spring picnic in the backyard that makes an ordinary afternoon feel a little more special.
It doesn’t have to be extravagant, sometimes, I just slice up some meat and cheese, grab a handful of crackers, and add some fruit to the mix, and the kids are thrilled.
Picnic Snack Boxes
I love these snack boxes for picnics in the backyard. I can fill them up with favorites and bring a variety of options for the kids to munch on.
We spread out a blanket under the shade, and they nibble away while pointing out clouds shaped like dinosaurs or spotting butterflies fluttering by.
It’s simple, a little messy, and full of the kind of small joys that make spring feel so refreshing.
6. Make a Spring Treat
One of my favorite ways to welcome spring with the kids is by baking something seasonal and sweet.
Last spring, my daughter asked if we could make strawberry bread, and since we didn’t have a recipe, we decided to create our own.
It turned into one of those perfectly imperfect baking sessions, flour on the counter, sticky strawberry-covered fingers, and lots of taste-testing along the way.
The end result? A soft, slightly sweet bread bursting with fresh strawberries that instantly felt like spring.
Now, as the season rolls around again, it’s time to bring back our tradition, maybe adding a little glaze this time.
Baking together always feels like a little celebration, and there’s no better way to welcome spring than with a homemade treat and happy, messy hands in the kitchen.

7. Play “This or That” Spring Edition
A fun way to celebrate the start of spring in our home is with a “This or That” but with a twist!
OUr family has created a fun twist on the game that is loved by everyone.
Instead of just picking our own favorites, we have to guess what the person next to us would choose. It always leads to lots of laughs and sometimes surprising answers! I swear, my three year-old will purposely pick the opposite of what the person guessed just for a good laugh.
From picnics or BBQs to gardening or flower picking, it’s such a simple way to enjoy the season and make sweet memories together.
Try it with your own family and see who gets the most right!
You can have each person around the table pick to topices to choose from or feel free to use my Spring Version.
