Why the Entryway Matters

I’ve always felt like the entryway, whether indoors or out, sets the tone for the whole house. It’s the first thing guests see when they walk into the space that welcomes them home after a long day.

During the winter months, I love making the entryway feel extra cozy and inviting, even some of the smallest touches can make such a big difference.

There’s something about coming inside from the cold and being greeted by soft lighting, warm textures, and little seasonal accents that makes home feel even more comforting and inviting.

In this post, I’m sharing how I styled our entryway table for winter.

It’s simple, cozy, and uses some pieces I already had on hand, mixed with a few of my favorites I’ve recently found.

If you’re like me and love adding small, cozy details to your home, I hope these ideas inspire your to create a space that not only feels cozy but also tells your story the moment you step inside.

Creating a Cozy Winter Entryway

Last year, our entryway was simple, a small table that held a mirror, and a vase that I’d rotate the dried stems based on the season. I kept things minimal inside (mainly because we didn’t have formal “entryway” with our split-level home), and I focused more on making the front porch welcoming.

But now that we’ve moved to Texas Hill Country and have a formal entryway space, I’ve been having fun figuring out how to make this space feel warm and inviting, especially in the quiet months of winter.

It’s easy to style for Christmas because you had so many options for festive, twinkling decor but I’ve found I’m really loving the softer and more neutral pieces I’ve added to ease us into winter.

I want our entryway to be a cozy spot that welcomes us home everyday and just as important, makes our guest feel at home too.

Now that I’ve settled into styling this little area, I thought it’d be fun to break down how I’ve layered the pieces and how you can recreate a similar look to fit your space and reflect your own story. Let’s dive in and make your entryway feel like home.

Start with a Vision

After my holiday decorations came down, I was left with a blank table, a blank slate. The possibilities for my winter table were endless. I debated leaving some of the green garland but it felt a bit too heavy for the space, I wanted something more simple.

A space that felt warm and cozy, despite the weather outside. I knew this meant I’d want more warm neutral tones, with soft textures, but I also wanted pieces that told our family’s story. I wanted to create an entryway that felt cozy and inviting.

How to Incorporate this for Yourself

Creating your own cozy entryway doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Start by gathering inspiration speaks to you, your style, and your family’s story.

You can find inspiration through a variety of methods, such as Pinterest boards, home design books, magazines, social media, or even plaything attention to what makes your feel cozy when you walk into someone else’s home.

You can easily create a mood board if you’d like to have all your idea’s in one spot.

I like to start my seasonal designs with a vision board on Pinterest. It keeps all my ideas together while I’m designing the space. And remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect all at once.

I usually start with a few pieces, and tweak them over time and build from a base until I’m happy with the outcome.

Key Elements for an Entryway Table (Styling Guide)

An Anchoring Piece

There are so many options on designing an entryway space. When we first moved into this house I debated an entryway table, vintage dresser or chest or even a bench.

When deciding on a large anchoring piece, make it functional for your family.

A bench in this space didn’t make sense for us. We actually use our backdoor for entering and exiting the house so sitting to put on shoes here wouldn’t have been practical.

However, this space is one that can be seen from our main living space, where we spend most of our time, which meant I wanted it visually appealing and a table offered options for additional storage and style.

The anchoring piece you have (or choose) will be the foundation for layering your decor.

I spent a lot of time researching tables. I wanted one that was large enough for baskets on the bottom for family storage. I ended up going with this table because I loved that it was a skinny table that already had a weathered look to it.

After you’ve chosen your anchor piece, you get to move onto the fun part, STYLING!

Entryway Focal Point

Once you’ve decided on your anchoring piece, you’ll move onto your focal point.

In our space, I chose a large round black mirror because it complements the overall style of our home – a mix of warm wood tones and rustic touches.

The contrast feels just right, adding a bit of modern edge while still blending seamlessly with the cozy, lived-in feel we love. It’s simple but makes a statement, grounding the entryway and tying together the natural elements around it.

When deciding on a facial point, there are endless possibilities but you’ll want to go for something larger, usually a mirror or piece of art to really anchor your space.

I love mirrors because they also reflect the natural light that flows through our front door and windows. It makes our space feel so much lighter on those cold winter days.

Candles and Books

When I started styling the table, I left the candle sticks and beeswax candles from Christmas. They felt neutral enough to carry through the winter, adding just the right amount of warmth and texture without feeling too festive.

I knew I wanted to bring out my home design books. They’ve been tucked away in a box since we moved sixes months ago, just waiting for the perfect spot. It felt like the right time to dust them off and give them a little love.

Books add such an easy, personal touch to the entryway table. They bring in height, color, and texture without feeling too overdone. I love how they make the space feel more lived-in, layered, and personalized to us and things we enjoy.

Plus, stacking a candle or small item on top gives it that styled look I always enjoy.

How to Incorporate This for Yourself: Start by gathering a few of your favorite coffee table books or books in general, ones that reflect your styled and feel meaningful to you.

Stack them to add layers and create visual interest.

I played around with my books, starting with two books then adding and rearranging until it felt just right.

It’s all about finding the balance where the table feels styled but not too overdone.

You can layer your books with a candle or small object, my taper candles felt right here because they balanced the height of the dried stems I have placed to the right of them.

Don’t worry about making it perfect, the beauty is int he mix of textures and personal touches that make your space feel like home.

Dried Stems and Vase

For Christmas I had a large terracotta vase full of stems but as it sat on the table, it felt too heavy for my light and bright winter decor. As I studied the space and left it empty for a few days, I knew there needed to be a vase I just wasn’t sure what the vase would look like.

I shopped my home first, trying a variety of cream and black vases that I already had on hand but none of them felt just right.

While strolling through Target one day, I came across the new Hearth & Hand spring collection. I’d had my eye on the “Spring Grass and Flower Stems” since before Christmas but wasn’t sure if I’d have the right spot for them. As I was admiring the stems again, I noticed the ribbed glass vase nearby. I instantly loved the texture and how it complemented the stems. It felt like the perfect piece to add height and pair with my stack of natural-toned books – simple, timeless, and just right for the entryway.

Lamps

Once I had the right side of the table to a point where it felt complete, it was time to focus on the right side.

I already had an extra book that didn’t fit my book stack and a candle from Christmas so those were easy additions.

Originally my main source of height was the vase and stems on the right side of the table, but something still felt like it was missing.

That’s when I decided the left side also needed some height, and found this lamp.

It brought a sense of balance and warmth to the table and instantly completed the look.

I love how the lamp’s height complements the vase without overpowering it.

It’s a simple addition, but it made all the difference in pulling this space together.

How to Incorporate This for Yourself: Start by choosing one tall element, like a tall piece of artwork, or a vase & stems, to add height and draw the eye upward.

Once you have your height, work on balancing the opposite side of the table with something like a lamp, or any other statement piece that can create symmetry and warmth in the space.

If you’re going with a lamp, look for one that feels cohesive in your space. You may already have one in your home that you can move to this space or you may find one while you’re out shopping (or thrifting).

If you have a lamp you like but not the shade, you can always swap your shades for a brand new look.

The key to this is adding height to your table and balance.

Don’t be afraid to rearrange things, sometimes even a small shift can make the biggest impact!

Decorative Baskets (Under the Table)

I love keeping my spaces functional, and the decorative baskets under my table are no exception.

They’re not just for looks – they’re filled with socks for the family, which has been a lifesaver during colder months. The kids know exactly where to grab a pair before heading out the door, and it keeps the entryway organized without sacrificing style.

I chose baskets with natural textures to add warmth and a cozy, lived-in feel.

Whether you’re storing shoes, blankets, or those little essentials like socks, baskets are an easy way to blend function with decor, making the space both practical and inviting.

Adding Personal Touches to Your Winter Entryway

While seasonal decor like greenery and candles can make an entryway feel warm and festive, I’ve found that it’s the personal touches that really make the space feel like home.

One of my favorite things on our entryway table right now is our 2023 yearly photo album. It’s a small reminder of the memories we made throughout the year, and I love that it’s one of the first things we see when we walk through the door.

If you’re styling your entryway, I encourage you to add something that tells your story – maybe a framed family photo, a handmade piece from your kids, or even a favorite book that feels meaningful to you. These little details not only make the space more personal but also create a welcoming vibe that reflects who you are.

It’s easy to get caught up in perfectly curated decor, but blending in items that carry sentimental value can turn an entryway from just a pretty space into one that feels lived-in, loved, and uniquely yours.

Ends of the Table

It’s easy to focus on styling the top of the table, but the ends are just as important for creating a balanced, cozy look.

I added a small stool with a live plant on one side, which brings in a touch of greenery and life to the space. On the opposite end, I tucked in a chair with a soft blanket draped over it – perfect for adding texture and making the entryway feel warm and inviting.

These simple additions help frame the table, making the entire entryway feel more thoughtful and complete.

Tying it Together with a Rug

A rug is one of those finishing touches that can completely ground the entryway and tie everything together.

I chose a neutral, textured rug that complements the warm wood tones and adds a soft layer underfoot.

I love this rug because it’s washable – which is perfect for our family with four kids and a dog. It helps define the space, especially in an open-concept area, and makes the whole entryway feel cozier.

Whether you go for something with subtle pattern or stick to a simple woven design, a rug adds that final bit of warmth and makes the entry feel intentional and complete.

Plus, it’s practical – catching dirt and giving everyone a spot to wipe their feet as they come in.

Simple Touches, Big Impact

At the end of the day, creating a cozy entryway is all about adding those little touches that make your home feel warm and welcoming – not just for guests, but for your family too.

It doesn’t have to be overcomplicated.

A soft lamp glow, a vase of simple stems, and a few baskets for everyday essentials can make all the difference. I hope this inspires you to bring a little extra warmth into your space this winter.

I’ve put together a gallery of my entryway images so you can see how it all came together. I hope it sparks some ideas for your own space!
