Christmas is over and now it’s time to take down the holiday decor and prep for a fresh start to the new year.

I just love the glow of Christmas decor, the twinkling lights, the warmth of the trees, and the memories we’ve made during the season.
I always get a little emotional when it’s time to pack things up, but with the right storage tips, I’ve learned how to keep our sentimental pieces safe and organized for years to come.
This guide is full of stress-free ideas to store your ornaments, lights, and wreaths so you can focus on saving the magic for years to come.
If you’re here reading this, I’m guessing you share my love for holidays and seasonal decor, and that probably means you have a good amount of Christmas decorations to carefully store away until next season too.
So let’s dive in.
Your Guide to Holiday Decor Storage
Start with Decluttering
At the end of each season, I like to take some time to declutter.
I go through the decor I’ve displayed around the house, as well as the items that stayed in the storage totes, and decide what to keep, what to donate, and what needs replacing—sometimes I even find a few pieces that are too broken to save.
Since we’re a military family and move frequently, sometimes the decor I had used the previous year, doesn’t quite our new house.
And sometimes, my taste in decor has changed and it means it’s time to donate or sell items to give them a second life.

Last year, we had this beautiful Advent calendar displayed on our entryway table, but this year my son gifted me a new one for my birthday. That meant the old one stayed tucked away in storage.
I couldn’t quite figure out the perfect spot for it this year, but I decided to hold on to it for at least another season to see if inspiration strikes next year.
I like to follow a two-year rule when it comes to holiday decor: if something hasn’t been used in two holiday seasons, it’s time to donate it.
Another area I focus on when it comes time for holiday decluttering is Christmas lights.
Am I the only one who feels like Christmas lights just don’t seem to last as long as they used to.
I’ll buy lights one year, and by next season, half of them don’t work anymore.
Don’t hold onto broken or non-working lights, they’ll only add to the clutter. If you come across lights that no longer work, it’s time to let them go.
Invest in Smart Storage Solutions
It was only about three years ago that I started investing in proper storage solutions for my holiday decor.
Before that, I relied on the original boxes or random wicker baskets and just hoped for the best from one season to the next.
I finally realized that my holiday collection was growing and needed proper storage solutions to keep our decor—and the memories attached to it—safe from year to year.
With my growing collection of holiday decor, finding the right storage solutions has made all the difference in keeping everything organized and protected.
Over the years, I’ve discovered a few go-to storage items that have truly simplified the process and made packing up after the holidays so much easier.
Let me share some of my favorite holiday storage solutions with you!
Christmas Tree Storage
It’s time to say goodbye to those flimsy Christmas tree boxes—let’s be honest, the tree never fits back into them properly anyway!
You’ll want to invest in a Christmas tree bag, I’m sharing a few with you below but here are some things to consider.
- Size: You want to make sure the bag you buy/order is large enough to fit your tree.
- Handles/Wheels: This isn’t one that I really would’ve put much thought into but after trying to carry about a 9 ft tree storage bag, I wish I would’ve bought one that had wheels. I can easily carry our 7 ft tree but the 9 ft is a lot heavier.
- Protection Features: Depending upon where you decide to store your tree, you may want a water-resistant bag to protect from moisture, dust, and pest during storage.

Christmas Decor Totes

I love using storage totes for my Christmas decor. There are several options for how to use totes to store your decor.
For instance, my totes are color coordinated, green totes have garlands, and my red totes have general Christmas items, and clear totes for my linens, throws and pillows.
You could also do clear for all your storage needs and label them.

Christmas Ornament Storage
Although my store bought ornaments are shatterproof, we have several homemade ornaments that I like to keep safe.
The kids also had their own Christmas trees in their room this year along with their ornaments which meant it was time to get our ornaments organized.

Christmas Light Storage
And last on my list is storage for those pesky lights.
I used to just toss them in my tote and hope for the best but I’ve learned it’s better to be organized at the end of the season to save myself the headache at the beginning of the next season.

Label Maker
This one is totally optional, you can easily use sticker and a permanent marker to label your items but if you fancy something else, these label makers are a game changer.
